In some recent conversations, it was discovered that the new Ontario holiday in February [called Family Day] is a poor name choice. It was further discovered that there really couldn’t have been any other name for it. Still, I was wondering if my dear readers can pitch in and add some thoughts of their own. What would you call this holiday? Would you have it in February? Would you rather have it on a Friday? Would we rather officially celebrate Chinese New Year? What do you think?

Please. Insert Thought Here. [i.e. comment]

  1. Darcy Said,

There was talk about making Flag Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Flag_of_Canada_Day) a national holiday in February.

I think Dalton was just copying Alberta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta_Family_Day)

(Two links. Wonder if this is getting screened…)

I’m fine with holiday Mondays. Holiday Fridays would be weird, like we’re suddenly getting PD days again.

  2. Sam Leung Said,

I live for PD days. Those were so awesome in elementary school.

  3. Jos Said,

I dunno. They’re gonna have enough trouble getting people to follow through with the day off anyway. A lot of businesses are not happy about this.

Besides, shouldn’t weekends be family days anyway? I wish I understood why he thought this was so important. Not that I don’t like the idea…but still.

I don’t think there’s a much better name for “Spend quality time with your family for a day.” The funny thing is, I think it’ll mostly be people who already spend quality time with their families who follow through on what that day is supposed to do.

Anyway, those are my couple of cents. In terms of name? Meh, who cares. ;)

  4. Erika Said,

I believe that Family Day occurs on a Monday in Alberta, because the prior Thursday and Friday is a teacher’s conference, or 2 days of PD days or something. It’d be nice of Quebec had adopted this, but not yet.

Regarding the name, one could really pick a name from a hat, and it would be just as relevant. Perhaps calling it “S.A.D reduction day” or something equivalent would be more accurate.

Maybe calling it “Family Day” will encourage people to spend time with family, rather than spend time with friends and shopping (eg. Boxing day is now the stupidest conceptual day. It was supposed to be a day off for all people, including labourers, and now its shopping hell…) Carrying on with the name “Family Day” – it might at least inspire some to bother spending time with family, just as “Mother’s Day” and “Father’s Day” inspire people to contact their parents.

  5. felix Said,

I recommend “take-a-day-off-before-you-go-completely-crazy day.” Similar to reading week.
