A Quick Observation

Posted by Sam C.W. Leung under Daily Ruminations

A relative quick observation on UAE.

They like their things big. In all sense of the word.

They also tend to concentrate on the big picture, which unfortunately lets the details fall by the wayside.

That is all…please continue with your daily schedules.

I’ll be out in the UAE for the next few days at the EWB Conference. Posts and replies may be sporadic.

Temple

I was going to write about this a few days ago when I actually went to the temple (I believe it was a Wednesday). Still, better late than never.

Observing Culture

In the past few days, I’ve had the opportunity to observe differences between North American and Hong Kong culture. Here’s a quick summary: Read the rest of this entry »

Trip!

Posted by Sam C.W. Leung under Personal

So I’ve just arrived in Hong Kong…a week-long stopover here until I get to the EWB conference in Abu Dhabi. In case some of you didn’t know, I made a voluntary overnight in Chicago yesterday (long story short, I missed my flight). It was surprisingly fun and I thoroughly enjoyed myself; I hope to make another trip there before the year gives out.

In any case, I’m tired. So I’ll leave this post as is and come back later to fill in some holes. Until then though…

As mentioned before, Deputy Governor David Longworth of the Bank of Canada gave a talk on Inflation Targetting approach as the most sustainable economic policy. While I know there are PowerPoint slides floating out there, I’ve yet to find them. Once I do, I’ll post them here.

Here are my thoughts on the talk and the policy overall.

Light Day

Posted by Sam C.W. Leung under Uncategorized

It’s been a light day here in the Big Room (the classroom) and a lot of the people have retreated to the confines of the breakout and conference rooms.

We’ve got a presentation by the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada on inflation. It’ll be good times. Watch for a recap here afterwards.

Interesting Event this week

The Planetary University As A Catalyst For Local/Regional Sustainability

Special talk with Michael M’Gonigle, co-founder of Greenpeace International and author of Planet U: Sustaining the World, Reinventing the University.

Sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Environmental Studies.

Where: Festival Room, South Campus Hall
When: Wednesday February 7th, 7:30pm

But since I feel a little tired, I’ll let it slide into nothingness.

The weekend has been somewhat ok – wish I had gotten more work done. However, since a number of classes I’ve prepped for this past week has been postponed to this week, I find myself content with my current lazy state.

I decided to skip FASS again this year (like I do every year), and instead hit up the UpStart Festival. While I usually don’t try to be snobbish about things, I find myself being completely snobbish with theatre. I think I’ll blame my high school upbringing.

I attended the Saturday night show, which allowed me to catch a few good shows including The Wrong Play and my good friend Mike K’s work Interviewing Stu. It was a pretty good night of student productions. They still have another weekend left in production, so I encourage you all to check it out.

Non-hostage Negotiations

Posted by Sam C.W. Leung under Daily Ruminations

It appears we’ve got a session in negotiations this morning. Unfortunately, it’s a video straight from the 80s (from the Stanford Business School) and it doesn’t involve any hostile hostage situation.

Fortunately, it is about baseball…I guess it’s not so bad afterall.
